Empowering people through the riches of the ocean

Who we are

Ukuloba Kulungile Investments (UKI) is a 100% black‐owned fishing company with interests both directly and through subsidiaries, in the Hake Inshore Trawl, Hake Longline (subject to a review), Horse Mackerel, Large Pelagic, Squid, Tuna Pole and Line and West Coast Rock Lobster sectors.

It has an interest in 8 vessels across these sectors and is involved in a number of joint ventures together with other rights holders as well as having a significant investment in a marketing arm which markets the bulk of its fish.

Where do we come from

Having started as a staff empowerment initiative in 1999, the company has lived up to its name, which means “Fishing, it is good!”.
From an initial investment, which focused on the squid sector, it has grown steadily over the years. Along the way, it developed its own long-term empowerment model, needs of shareholders with the long-term vision of growing the business by paying 50% of profits as dividends and retaining the balance to fund further growth and expansion.

Sticking together, we’re better

All of the original shareholders or their families are still involved in the business. They have all benefitted through the dividends paid over the years and are fully informed regarding the business of the company and where it is going. The board of directors who manage the business are all also shareholders and have a vested interest in the success of the business and between them have over 140 years of experience in the industry.

Collaboration and transparency

We have worked with many third parties, both within group structures and through joint ventures. The key to these relationships is always to understand clearly the basis on which they are set up and to have a win-win approach to making things work.

Financial and marketing expertise

One of the other keys to our success has been access to directors with a strong financial and marketing background, which has assisted us in growing the business. We are in the process of expanding that base of talent and are constantly investing in training of the next generation who will be able to take the business forward.

A common faith and ethics

The business has been blessed abundantly over the ears and the shareholders have a common faith in Jesus which anchors what we do. All of our meetings commence with prayer and we try to live up to His teachings in the way we do business and interact with people.

Partnerships and new ventures

We have been blessed with the partners we have had over the years and we are looking forward to setting up new joint ventures, particularly in the hake inshore, horse mackerel, large pelagic and West Coast rock lobster sectors where new entrants are welcome to contact us if they need assistance or would like to collaborate going forward. We are also looking for opportunities to expand further and are in the market to purchase additional capacity across a number of sectors.
